# Setting up a machine

Setting up a machine takes it from "I want to host" to listed on Nusa. It starts when you request a setup key and ends when your machine is listed.

Setup is best done on a computer. You can leave at any step and come back: you pick up where you stopped.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

## Request a setup key

Sign in, and request a setup key on the website. Before it's issued, you're told that renters may have the model they rent installed on your machine, and that after the benchmark you choose which models to keep installed and roughly how much disk space they take.

The first time, you also need to agree to the Nusa hosting agreement. Without agreeing, you can't get a setup key.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Install Nusa Node and enter the key

Install Nusa Node on the machine, with the desktop app or from the command line, and enter your setup key when it asks. The machine links to your account.

For a machine with no screen, request the key in a browser on any device, and paste it into the install command over SSH.

If you use the desktop app, Nusa Node starts when your computer starts, so your machine comes back after a restart. You can switch this off in its settings.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Run the benchmark

Nusa Node runs a benchmark to measure how fast your machine runs models.

If it fails, you're told what went wrong and what you can do, such as freeing up disk space, and you can run it again. If your hardware doesn't meet the [requirements](/welcome.md#what-hardware-can-host), you're told which one, with a way to the waitlist.

You can't go on until the benchmark has succeeded.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Choose which models to keep installed

Choose which of Nusa's models stay installed. You're offered the models your machine can run, each with the disk space it takes, and you can choose any number, or none. The model the benchmark uses always stays installed.

* A machine that keeps a model installed is recommended first to renters choosing that model.
* A model that wouldn't fit can't be chosen.
* Choosing none doesn't keep your machine off the market.

You can change this later from the machine's page, where you can also set how much disk space models may use.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Set your price

Set the hourly price renters will pay. See [Setting a price](#setting-a-price).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Wait for the models to install

Once the price is set, the models you chose are installed, and your machine is listed by itself when they're done.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Setup keys

A setup key links a machine to your account.

* **It's shown once**, when it's issued. Keep it until you've entered it.
* **It lasts 24 hours.** After that, request a new one. Machines already linked stay linked.
* **You can replace it at any time.** The old one stops working at once.

If a machine is still linked to someone else's account, for example one you bought, its owner needs to remove it first.

## The benchmark

The benchmark measures how fast your machine runs models. It's separate from your reliability score, which is about how well you keep the machine running.

After setup, you can run it again from the machine's page, for example after a driver update, but not while the machine is rented or offline. While it runs, the machine can't be rented.

## Setting a price

After the benchmark, Nusa suggests an hourly price in USD, based on what machines of the same type have rented for on Nusa recently. It's shown as a range, with one price filled in that you can accept. If there's no reference for your machine's type yet, you set your own.

* **Any price above zero is accepted.** A price outside the suggested range carries a reminder, but isn't refused.
* **The price you set is what renters pay per hour.** Nusa's fee is taken from what you earn, not added for the renter.
* **You see the fee rate and what you keep per hour** as you enter it. See [What hosting earns](file:///6919936/credit/hosting-earnings.md).
* **You can't withdraw during Beta.** See [Withdrawing](file:///6919936/credit/withdrawing.md).

You can change the price at any time from the machine's page. A new price never changes a rental already paid for.

## Setting up several machines

You can set up several machines at the same time. Each one goes through the steps on its own, and one doesn't hold up another. Your list of machines shows how far each one has got, and you choose which one to continue.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.nusa.nissology.ai/hosting/setting-up-a-machine.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
